LGBTQIA+ Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The LGBTQIA+ Undergraduate Scholarship Program encourages gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual UCSD students to apply for scholarships made possible by generous contributions from many people, including Chris Arrott, Michael Marx and Donald Marshall, Russ Ty, Dr. Thomas Baker, MD and Dr. Marc Better, PH.D and from funds in memory of Tracee Parsons and Stephen P. L'Italien, Jr. The objective of the undergraduate scholarship program is to recognize and encourage academic excellence and to offer financial support to meritorious students. About the LGBTQIA+ Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The objective of the undergraduate scholarship program is to recognize and encourage academic excellence and to offer financial support to meritorious students. Scholarship recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and will have clearly demonstrated strong skills in many areas, including academic scholarship, leadership involvement, and community service in their application.

The LGBTQIA+ Undergraduate Scholarships

Thomas Baker and Marc Better Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Thomas Baker, MD. '73 and Marc Better, Ph.D. to provide scholarship support for undergraduate students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0; have demonstrated financial need; have a science major, are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community; and have academic, campus, or community leadership experience. Preference shall be given to students attending Revelle College. 

This is a one-year award up to $2,000.

Christopher B. Arrott LGBTQ Endowed Scholarship

The Christopher B. Arrott LGBTQ Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a current LGBTQIA+ undergraduate student with a record of active service and involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community.  This scholarship was established in 1999 by Christopher B. Arrott, who is an alumnus of UCSD.  Chris continues his commitment to UCSD by staying connected to the LGBT Resource Center and by serving on the Board of Directors for the UCSD Alumni Association.

This is a one-year award up to $1,000.

Marx & Marshall Gay and Lesbian Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1996 by Michael Marx and Donald Marshall, two long-time friends of the LGBT Resource Center. Through their generosity and the generosity of other community friends, this scholarship recognizes students who have strong academic records and are active in the LGBTQIA+ community.

This scholarship is awarded to UCSD LGBTQIA+ students based on academic merit, who have made significant contribution to the LGBTQIA+ community. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need. Financial need students must be receiving financial aid.

This is a one-year award up to $1,000.

Russ Ty Gay and Lesbian Scholarship

The Russ Ty Scholarship was established in 1998 and is awarded to a current LGBTQIA+ undergraduate student based on academic achievement. Russ Ty, a UC graduate, had a twenty year career in the U.S. Army and is now retired.

This scholarship is awarded to a UCSD LGBTQIA+ student based on academic merit and financial need.

This is a one-year award up to $1,000.

UCSD LGBT Resource Center Undergraduate Scholarship

The UCSD LGBT Resource Center Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to a current LGBTQIA+ undergraduate student based on academic merit and is awarded to a person who has had significant experience with issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. It is made possible through the generosity of the UCSD LGBTQIA+ community, and especially through the LGBT Resource Center Advisory Board.

This scholarship is awarded to a UCSD LGBTQIA+ student based on merit, need, and significant experience with issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

This is a one-year award up to $1,000.

Tracee Parsons Scholarship for UCSD LGBT Students in Math & Science

The Tracee Parsons Scholarship for LGBT Students in Math and Science was established in 2007 in memory of Tracee Parsons, the partner of UCSD faculty member Dr. Deborah Morton. This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of many community friends.

This scholarship is awarded to current LGBTQIA+ undergraduate students based on academic merit, financial need and demonstrated commitment to the fields of math and/or science.

Stephen P. L’Italien, Jr. Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship

The Stephen P. L’Italien, Jr. Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship, established in 2007, is awarded to current LGBTQIA+ undergraduate students based on demonstrated mentorship and leadership in their community, an exceptional record of community service, commitment to sharing international experience both while abroad and upon return, involvement in extracurricular activities and demonstrated academic excellence. Recipients must provide evidence of planned participation in an academic program abroad through the Education Abroad Program, the Opportunities Abroad Program, or UCSD’s Global Seminars.

These four (4) scholarships are awarded to current LGBTQIA+ students up to $1,000.

Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship

Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship is envisioned to be established in 2015 by the Center for Networked Systems through philanthropic partnership. A founder of the field of computer science and a brilliant mathematician, Alan Turing's work contributed substantially to the Allied victory in World War II through his brilliant codebreaking. After the war, Turing suffered outright persecution for his activities as a gay man. He died by suicide in 1954.The Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship is a decisive step in reframing a legacy so unjustly limited by a culture not ready to embrace the wealth of perspective and experience difference can bring.

The Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship is an award for undergraduate students who are majoring in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, and who are active in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.
