UC San Diego’s Out and Proud Week

April 21–April 25, 2014


Out and Proud Week presents the largest opportunity for community visibility on the UC San Diego campus.  It is a week-long group celebration and private reflection on the achievements of LGBT-identified students, staff, and faculty and our allies.  It is also a time for public awareness and discussion of current LGBT issues on the state and national levels.

Monday-Thursday
The LGBT Resource Center will be on Library Walk the week of April 21 – April 24, 2013, from 10:30am-3pm.  We'll be tabling with folks from various LGBT student, staff, and faculty organizations.  Each day our balloon arch will change! On Tuesday we celebrate Bi/Fluid pride and Thursday we celebrate Trans*Pride.  On Monday and Wednesday,we will have our rainbow balloon arch. Come visit us at the balloon arch!

OUT for Lunch

Kick off this year’s Out and Proud Week with a brown bag lunch on Library Walk by the rainbow balloon arch!  We want ALL members of the LGBT community and our allies to be visible at the center of campus.  Enjoy your lunch with friends and community around you.

Speaking Truth to Power through Art:  Julio Salgado

Julio Salgado, an artist, activist, and an undocuqueer from Oakland (via Long Beach) will perform a pop-up art show and discuss art as part of movement building, the complexity in social movements, and the need to be innovative in the pursuit of justice. For more information: alm003@ucsd.edu.

Recovering the Arab Queer

How to a write a historical and "lesbian" novel set in 9th century Iraq (and why does it even matter)

Dr. Habib reveals the journey which led to the making of her novel, Rughum and Najda, and an infectious enthusiasm for same-sex love and desire in the Arab world of the first millennium. Her work revels in the timelessness of what makes us human, while paying attention to the particularities of place and time.


Bio: Dr. Samar Habib is an associate researcher at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Habib’s work spans the publication of numerous articles and books chapters as well as several books, including Female Homosexuality in the Middle East (New York: Routledge, 2007 & 2009); Arabo-Islamic Texts on Female Homosexuality (New York: Teneo, 2009); I Am You (New York: Cambria, 2008); and Islam and Homosexuality (Oxford: Praeger, 2010). Her creative works include two published novels and a chapbook of poetry. She was a co-founder and the General Editor of Nebula (2004-2011) and is a co-founder and publisher of African Nebula.

Dr. Kevin Nadal Lecture: That's So Gay!: Microaggressions and the LGBT Community

Dr. Kevin Leo Yabut Nadal is an award-winning professor, psychologist, performer, activist, and author, who received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University in New York City. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of  psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice- City University of New York, where he is also the deputy director of the Forensic Mental Health Counseling Program. He is one of the leading researchers in understanding the impacts of microaggressions , or subtle forms of discrimination, on the mental and physical health of people of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and other marginalized groups. He has published over 50 works on multicultural issues in the fields of psychology and education.  A California-bred New Yorker, Kevin is also a part-time comedian and spoken word artist who has performed across the United States since 2000. He is the author of the books Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice (2011, John Wiley and Sons) and Filipino American Psychology: A Collection of Personal Narratives (2010, Author House), a co-editor ofWomen and Mental Disorders (2011, Praeger), and the author of That's So Gay: Microaggressions and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community (2013, APA Books).

 

Career Paths of Queer Black Women featuring Fofie Amina Bashir, Nonprofit Management/Community Organizer

Fofie Amina Bashir came to San Diego in early 2012, returning to the west coast after working for nearly 20 years with nonprofit organizations and foundation affinity groups in New York, NY and Washington, DC. Her professional and volunteer work has focused on health education and empowerment in low income and immigrant communities, AIDS/HIV education, domestic and community violence prevention, and LGBTQ coalition building.

Fofie currently serves as Director of Operations for Alliance San Diego, an organization

dedicated to building coalitions and mobilizing resources and our communities for social justice and positive change. She is also a founding member of the MackeyCua

Project, a multigenerational space for LGBTQIIA people of color to build community and advocate for the needs of Queer People of Color in San Diego. Fofie has traveled extensively and has done volunteer work and spiritual studies in West Africa and Cuba. A bicultural child of an immigrant family, Fofie is committed in her personal and professional life to social justice and to health and educational empowerment.
