The UCSD LGBT Scholarship Program encourages gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender UCSD students to apply for the four scholarships made possible by generous contributions from many people, including Chris Arrott, Michael Marx and Donald Marshall, Russ Ty, and others in our community who support our students. The objective of the undergraduate scholarship program is to recognize and encourage academic excellence, and to offer financial support to meritorious students.

All 2006-2007 LGBT Scholarship applications should be submitted to the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC). Notification of awards will be made via mail to the address listed on the application form and not forwarded to the student's permanent address.

UCSD LGBT SPECIFIC EVENTS

2) HTML Version of the Newsletter!

So after all the chaos and excitement of moving to our new space, we've finally completed our new html version of the LGBT Resource Center's weekly newsletter. In order to send out something more dynamic than plain text, and to better understand the community of those that get the newsletter, we're moving to a new system. This requires that everyone visit our website to re-subscribe their email addresses. The link for adding your email address is http://lgbt.ucsd.edu/newsletters/. From here, you will see the option of both adding and deleting your email from our system, thus giving more control of this function to y'all. Also, you will be given the option of choosing which category under which you fall, in the event that we have information to send out to specific groups that the Center serves. This also allows us to track who accesses the weekly newsletter for purposes of funding and for our quarterly reports. Don't worry, this information is, as always, completely confidential, and will not be used for any other reason that those stated above.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am to see a new, more dynamic, and definitely more up-to-date, newsletter. As much fun as working in plain text is (...), I can't wait to get this new system out. Also, thanks to our very own graphic design coordinator, Clement, for his amazing work on this awesome html newsletter. He's put a lot of work into it and everyone should thank him for all the effort. I just get to use the purdy thing that he designed.

This will be the first of two announcements about subscribing before we change over to the new system, so take the time now to change, as you won't receive newsletters come next quarter if you don't subscribe. Make sure to tell all your friends and anyone you know that subscribes to our current newsletter about the switch also. Thanks everyone, and I'll be writing to you in the new version soon!
~ Will, the newsletter coordinator

3) Blessing our new home in the Jewish tradition - Thu, March 16th, 5:00pm

Please join us this Thursday, March 16th at 5pm for an interactive program where we draw blessings into our new space in the Jewish tradition. Rabbi Lisa Goldstein from our own Hillel will be facilitating.

This is a part of a series of continuing events where we settle and make our new space truly a home for everyone in our community. The first was the traditional Cherokee Smudging that took place last week.

4) LGBTQIA Non-Sexist Dance - Sat, March 18th, 9:00pm-1:00am

The second LGBTQIA Non-Sexist Dance of Winter Quarter is happening this Saturday, March 18th; same time, same place (9pm-1am @ Porter's Pub). We know that it is the Saturday before finals, but you need to take a break from studying and have fun with your friends one last time before Spring Break. So get out of Geisel and go to the Pub for a night of dancing, fun, and general debauchery (keep it clean...) this Saturday. See you there.

5) Queer Spirituality Forum Planning Meeting - Fri, March 17th, 1:00pm-2:00pm

Hey are you Queer? Are you spiritual? Or were you spiritual at some point in your life? Queer spirituality is an issue almost never discussed in our community, but for many of us it's an important aspect of who we are as people.

The next committee planning meeting is this Friday, March 17th from 1pm to 2pm in the LGBTRC. The Queer Spirituality Forum itself will take place on the Friday of Out and Proud Week on May 5th from 12noon to 3pm. For more information contact Kevin Mann at kmann@ucsd.edu

6) Queer Film: "Ronda Nocturna" at the Latino Film Festival - Sun, March 19th, 6:00pm

Ronda Nocturna is a Queer Argentinean film playing at the San Diego Latino Film Festival at 10pm on Sunday March 17th at the Hazard Center (near Fashion Valley). I'm trying to get as many people of the UCSD Queer Community to go! We'll meet at the LGBTRC at 6pm for carpools, eat dinner at the Hazard Center, then watch the movie at 10pm. Email Kevin at kmann@ucsd.edu if you're interested.

Film Summary
Set in Argentina on the nightfall of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the film sets the stage for passionate encounters and inexplicable dangers on a particularly harrowing evening when the dead may return to earth and seek out their loved ones in hopes to bring them back to the other world. For teen hustler Victor, it proves to be a night of perilous adventure as he weaves in and out of the lives of cops, johns and rent boys in the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires.

7) Study Break at the LGBT Resource Center - Finals Week

Get all your finals week studying done at the UCSD LGBT Resource Center and work out those jitters, courtesy of the UCSD LGBT RC! The Resource Center will be open until 9 PM on every day of finals week for a STUDY BREAK. Coffee and snacks will be provided, of course. And as with all Study Breaks at the RC, please be mindful of others' study environment if you're just visiting.

Things you can do at the Resource Center to prepare for Finals Week:
-Use the new CyberCenter laptops to email professors for paper due-date extensions, alternate test days, etc...
-Use the new CyberCenter laptops to write those papers (please remember, 5 printed pages per person per day)
-Use the new CyberCenter laptops for internet access to get at those all-important WebCT class resources
-Use the Heritage Room or Conference Room for study groups
-Use our TV to watch videos/DVDs based on those books you were supposed to READ for your class (SHAME ON YOU!)
-Use our coffee to keep your brain rockin' and rollin' all night

GOOD LUCK WITH THEM FINALS, FOLKS!!

8) "A Look At Queer Art: A Historical Retrospective" - March 13th-24th

From our very own Elvia, our Arts and Culture Intern...

"'A Look At Queer Art: A Historical Retrospective'

From March 13-24, the LGBT Resource Center will display 'A Look At Queer Art: A Historical Retrospective.' Elvia, our Arts and Culture Intern, has put together a collection of art from some of the most influential LGBT artists from the past 200 years. It includes photography, literature, and paintings from artists like Robert Mapplethorpe, Claude Cahun, Andy Warhol, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Mary Meigs, among others.

The collection will be displayed in the lobby area of the new building, so please check it out!"

For more information about this art display, please e-mail lgbtartsnculture@ucsd.edu.

9) Queer by Nature Magic Mountain Trip - Mon, March 27th, 9:30am-6:00pm

Yet again, Queer by Nature is having an end of the quarter event to enjoy the precious time we get off between quarters. This time, we're heading north to Magic Mountain for a day at the amusement park. The plan is to meet at the park on Monday, March 27th around 9:30am. Because it is during Spring Break, and people will be all over the place, we need to coordinate rides a bit early this time. If you would like to attend, please email qxn@ucsd.edu and tell us who you are, if you need a ride or can drive, and where you're going to be on the preceding Sunday and that Monday for the sake of coordination.

We would like to buy tickets as a group, because they will only cost $21.50 per person, but in order to do this, we need money in ASAP, because we must purchase the tickets 10 days in advance, and we need to order at least 10 tickets. This makes it all the more important that you email us by next Wednesday, March 22nd. Both Will and Dan will be accepting the money for the tickets, so if you see them, and would like to go, feel free to give them your money (all of your money...mwhahah).

If you happen to miss our earlier deadline, realize later that you can go, or just want to pay more money, we're definitely fine with meeting anyone there with their own tickets, although they are $39.99 for an online ticket, not to mention the higher prices at the gate. We will keep those who are interested in going up to date with emails, so look out for them. Hope to hear you're all going!!

If you would like to see something specific at this event, or any QxN event, then please attend our bi-weekly meetings from 6:00pm-6:30pm at the LGBT Resource Center on Mondays. For more information contact qxn@ucsd.edu

10) Rainbow Graduation Reminder - June 10th

Every year the LGBT Resource Center holds our annual Rainbow Graduation Celebration and Induction into the LGBT Chapter of the Alumni Association for graduating LGBT identified individuals. At this time, we come together as a community to celebrate and commemorate our achievements, the graduating class and recognize outstanding LGBT scholars.

This announcement is being put out to encourage all those graduating to invite their families, friends and colleagues to this special celebration. Let's make this a bigger than ever "family" event in both the literal and the figurative sense!! This year's Rainbow Graduation will be held at ERC's Great Hall, on Saturday, June 10th, at 4:00pm. Make sure all those you would like to attend know this date and have it put into their calendars.

NOTE: This is not an official graduation ceremony. No diplomas will be given. However, graduating seniors will be given a fine certificate and rainbow tassel to wear on their mortarboards at their official college graduation ceremonies (should they wish to do so). This is our way of thanking seniors for their contribution to our community and allowing them to show their pride in that same community.

13) Human Relations Awareness Week Essay Contest - Extended Deadline March 24th

The Student Office of Human Relations is proud to present the Many Identities... One Community Essay Contest, part of the 2006 Human Relations Awareness Week (HRAW), April 24-28. The contest is open to all current UCSD undergraduate and graduate students registered winter ’06 and in good standing. Deadline for Submissions is March 24.

Formerly the Hate Free Campus Campaign, this annual event traditionally protested hate, prejudice, and all the “-isms” that tear down UCSD’s community fabric. This year's event, renamed the Human Relations Awareness Week, seeks to resonate with a broader audience. Our hope is that HRAW will bring diverse voices together under a common purpose and spark lively dialogue about the meanings of community at UCSD. For more information and entry form, see www.sohr.ucsd.edu

Also, stay tuned for upcoming information about other HRAW events. Contact Debbie Lou at dlou@ucsd.edu or 534-6708 if you would like to sponsor an event or help with general planning.

FEATURED QUEER FLICKS

15) Now available in our video library...

All About My Mother (1999)
Directed by Pedro Almodovar

After her son is killed in an accident, Manuela (Cecilia Roth) leaves Madrid for her old haunts in Barcelona. She reconnects with an old friend, a pre-op transsexual prostitute named La Agrado (Antonia San Juan), who introduces her to Rosa (Penélope Cruz), a young nun who turns out to be pregnant. Meanwhile, Manuela becomes a personal assistant for Huma Rojo (Marisa Paredes), an actress currently playing Blanche DuBois in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. All About My Mother traces the delicate web of friendship and loss that binds these women together. But fans of writer-director Pedro Almodóvar needn't fret--as always, Almodóvar's work undermines conventional notions of sexual identity and embraces all human possibilities with bright colors and melodramatic plotting. However, All About My Mother approaches its twists and turns with a broader emotional scope than most of Almodovar's work; even the more extravagant aspects of the story are presented quietly, to allow the sadness of life to be as present as the irrepressible vitality of the characters.

Q-QUOTE OF THE WEEK

16) By Jamie Raskin

Yesterday in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify. He did so. At the end of his testimony, a right-wing senator said:

"Mr Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man & a woman. What do you have to say about that?"

Raskin: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."

The room erupted into applause.

We are really settling into the new space, and it is feeling more and more like home. The sounds, the smells, the people are all becoming familiar to me as I experience each day. I truly love this new place, and am so proud to be part of such an incredible community that made it happen. It's not in the newsletter yet, but here is the secret... Beautiful Grand Opening ceremony on Saturday, May 6 at 10:30am. Hope you can make it.

The quarter is almost over for me. At this time next week I'll be preparing for my final paper presentation for the first term of my graduate education. I am nervous and excited all at the same time.
