The LGBT Resource Center is pleased to announce the opening of the
David Bohnett Wireless CyberCenter at the University of California, San
Diego in March 2006. The Wireless CyberCenter was made possible by a
grant from the
David Bohnett Foundation of over $22,000. We are very
grateful to the Foundation for their generous support!

The David Bohnett Wireless CyberCenter, located within the LGBT
Resource Center, includes ten state-of-the-art IBM laptop computers, a
laser printer, and scanner. The Wireless CyberCenter provides lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, community and their allies with the
resources to further meet the primary academic mission of the
university. It allows students, staff, faculty members, and researchers
easy, accessible technology in a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.
Laptops can be checked out and utilized throughout the LGBT Resource
Center.
The laptops and other resources provided by the
David Bohnett Foundation
increase our ability to sustain and develop community; the
person-to-person connection with the added technology interface. The
goal during the initial integration phase of the Wireless CyberCenter in
spring 2006 will be to allow visitors to learn the far-reaching
possibilities of the technology. There will be specific opportunities
for direct feedback on the use of the equipment to determine what
learning and growth has occurred. During the fall quarter of 2006,
specific programs will be offered based on the knowledge gained and the
feedback received.
The
David Bohnett Foundation is a grant-making organization with a
$30-million endowment dedicated to improving society through social
activism. The Foundation makes grants to national organizations that
focus their efforts in Southern California and to local LGBT centers
across the country, for the creation and support of David Bohnett
CyberCenters.
In 1994, David Bohnett founded GeoCities, a successful Internet-based
media and e-commerce company acquired by Yahoo! in 1999. In the course
of his career, David became keenly aware of what the Internet can
contribute toward facilitating change. He has made it the mission of the
foundation established in his name to ensure that the LGBT community is
well positioned to leverage the transformative power of the Web.
